Koltakov lets the storm blow over

Motul
14 September

Inclement weather prevailed on 18 and 19 February in Almaty during the Kazakh stage of the FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship: fog caused the competition to be interrupted on Saturday after twenty races, and fifteen centimetres of snow covered the ice on Sunday. But although the 6,000 spectators were freezing cold they were duly thrilled by the performances as is often the case in this discipline warmly supported by Motul.

In sporting terms, Igor Kononov is continuing to act the rebel. In Kazakhstan, he pulled off the feat of winning his ten races and also his half final and Sunday final. He clashed on three occasions with current world leader Dmitry Koltakov who had to content himself each time with 2nd place. Koltakov now knows what to expect: to give a new world championship win to Motul, he'll have to deal with this cumbersome compatriot!

Koltakov's lead is no longer more than two points over Kononov. The duo have distanced themselves from 2016 World champion Khomitsevich, while another Russian, who won in 2013 and 2014, will unfortunately be unable to finish the season. Daniil Ivanov injured his shoulder in the very first race of the meet. The unscathed will be in Berlin on 4 and 5 March for the next round!

FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators leading scorers after Final 3:

01 Dmitry Koltakov, 105 pts

02 Igor Kononov, 103 pts

03 Dmitry Khomitsevich, 94 pts
